print on pvc vinyl, </em><em>150x350cm</em></p> <p></p> <p class="MsoNormal">The piece shown here and titled ‘Landscape’ is the final work in the ‘Therapy’ series, which was preceded by four works collectively titled ‘Women’. Realising women were the primary cause for my own instability; I mapped out personal dialogue and events between these women on four different canvases before obscuring them with thick black brush marks. To complete the intervention and reassertion of control; I removed these marks from their non-sensical and unstable environments into a new context (‘Landscape’), adjusted their dimensions and re-ordered them to mirror the shape of a graph (on which I had recorded my levels of ‘happiness’ over a month).</p> <p class="MsoNormal">In Landscape, the marks resonate as buildings and this transition to a three-dimensional form suggests the physical process of restructuring I undertook. Printed much larger than a human being and hung off a wall, its size, hanging and the illusion of brush marks blurs its own formal definition, converting the print into an installation. Now an essential part of this installation piece is the space around it and the viewer. These factors stimulate intellectual speculation and force the viewer to interpret, navigate and interact with the work.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">The marks are bold yet they are still fragile and scattered. Despite their recontextualisation, their structure is still uneasy. Due to the enlargement, the marks have lost their texture, clarity and energy. Now the marks or buildings are seen from a new and distanced perspective. The experiments (‘Women’ paintings) aimed to absorb the viewer into my reality, to connect to my inner need and sympathise with my feeling.
